What is the Occupational Safety Card needed for?
The Occupational Safety Card is a voluntary but widely used basic training that promotes a safety culture in Finnish workplaces. Its goal is to reduce workplace accidents and hazardous situations and to clarify responsibilities, especially at shared workplaces where employees from multiple companies work together.
The card provides basic knowledge of workplace hazards, occupational safety, and safe working practices. It also supports employer orientation, as once the employee knows the basics, the site-specific training can focus on local risks. Additionally, it reduces overlapping training between client and contractor companies and motivates staff to maintain occupational safety.
Although the law does not specifically require an Occupational Safety Card, many companies demand it as proof of an employee’s safety competence. In Finland, the system is managed by the Centre for Occupational Safety (TTK).
